What to make with Old Monk at home

If there is one bottle in the cupboard, it is often Old Monk, and most of us only ever add cola. These 18 recipes do more with it. Each was written with Old Monk in mind. The recipe pages just say dark rum, so any dark rum will do. Start with the Tamarind Rum Smash or the Jaggery Coffee Rum Mug: both use what is already in the kitchen. There are shakes for dessert, warm mugs for cold nights and two jugs for friends. Tap any drink for exact measures and steps.

You chose mocktails only, so the drinks with alcohol are hidden here. See the mocktail guides

Questions

Can I use another rum instead of Old Monk?

Yes. These were written for Old Monk or any dark rum, which is why the recipe pages just say dark rum. White rum is lighter and will taste thinner in the milky and spiced drinks.

How many drinks will one 750 ml bottle make?

Most single drinks here use 45 to 50 ml, so a bottle gives about 15. The two jugs use 200 ml each and serve 4, so three jugs take 600 ml and pour 12 glasses.

I don't have kokum, khus or nannari syrup. What can I make?

Plenty. The Tamarind Rum Smash needs tamarind paste, jaggery, lime, mint and soda. The Jaggery Coffee Rum Mug needs coffee, milk, jaggery and two spices. The Chai Rum Milkshake needs tea, milk, ice cream, cardamom and cinnamon.
