Your Next Drink is a free drinks app made by Sudeep Sachdeva. Here is what it keeps on your phone, what it sends, and who gets to see it.

01What stays on your phone
These are saved in your browser, on this phone only:
- what's on your shelf, your shopping list and your favourites
- your age choice: all drinks, or mocktails only
- settings such as ml or pegs and the presets you switch on
- the first name you put on a “Tonight at …'s bar” menu card
- a recipe you're still writing in Add your recipe, until you send it
None of this is sent anywhere. The app also saves a copy of itself, its photos and the latest community recipes, so it works without internet.
One more thing is saved: a random code for this phone, 16 letters and numbers that have nothing to do with your name, number or contacts. It goes with the daily visit count (4). If you sign in to rate drinks, a sign-in cookie is saved as well (3). Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it, the code and the cookie included.
02When you add a recipe
When you tap Send for review, your recipe (drink name, type, glass, ingredients and steps) goes to a private Google Sheet that only Sudeep can open. With it go your name and, if you filled them in, your short title, Instagram handle and phone or email. Sudeep also gets an email saying a new recipe has arrived.
If he picks your recipe, it goes live with your name, title and Instagram handle, as the tick box says. Your phone or email is never shown to anyone. All of this is used only to credit you and to contact you about your recipe.
03Star ratings
To rate a drink you sign in with Google, once on each phone. That is how each person counts once and bots are kept out. Google sends the site a signed note confirming who signed in. It includes your name and email, but the site reads only your Google account's ID number and your first name, and keeps neither the email nor the ID itself.
For each rating we keep a scrambled version of that ID (a code that can't be turned back into your Google account), which drink, how many stars and when. Changing your mind replaces your old rating. Everyone sees only each drink's average and how many ratings it has. The ratings are kept by Cloudflare, which hosts the site.
Signing in saves a cookie on this phone, holding the scrambled code and your first name (for “Signed in as …”), so you stay signed in for up to 180 days. Tap Sign out under the stars to remove it. Google's sign-in itself is covered by Google's own privacy policy.
Ratings sent before sign-in was needed stay in Sudeep's sheet and are no longer shown.
04Counting visits
Cloudflare, which hosts the site, counts visits for us with its Web Analytics. It is anonymous and uses no cookies: we see only totals, such as how many times a page was opened.
On the first visit of each day, the app also adds one line to Sudeep's sheet: the date and time, this phone's random code, whether you opened it from your home screen, and whether this is the phone's first visit. That is how we know how many phones use Your Next Drink. It holds no name, number or location.
05No ads, no selling
There are no ads and no ad trackers, and we never sell, rent or swap anything about you. Only Google, which runs the sheet and the sign-in, and Cloudflare, which hosts the site and keeps the ratings, handle what is described here. When you share a drink or your menu, it goes only to the people you send it to.
