Two-ingredient drinks: bottle + mixer, no bar tools

Sometimes you want a drink and not a project. Each of these has two real ingredients: a bottle and a mixer. You need a glass, some ice and something to stir with. A straw or a clean spoon will do. There is no shaking, no muddling and no syrup to make. A slice of lime or lemon is nice if you have one, but the drink is complete without it. The measure for most spirits is 60 ml, so the only thing you need to get right is the ratio. Make the ice ahead.

Questions

How do I measure 60 ml without a jigger?

60 ml is 4 tablespoons, or a large peg if you have a steel peg measure at home. Most shot glasses hold 30 to 45 ml, so check yours once with water and a tablespoon, and then you will know how far to fill it.

How much mixer do I need?

Most of these take 60 ml of spirit and 150 ml of mixer, so 12 drinks from a 750 ml bottle need about 1.8 litres of mixer. Use less for a stronger drink. The Whisky Soda says 120 to 150 ml, and the Brandy Soda 120 ml.

Why does my drink go flat so fast?

Warm mixers lose their fizz fast, so keep them in the fridge. Fill the glass with ice, pour the spirit first, then pour the mixer slowly down the side, and stir only once. Open a fresh bottle or can when you can, and close it tightly after pouring.
